Digital Phone, Cable and our home security system going off when cable goes out? Need a fix for that.?
We recently had digital phone hooked up. We had cable for the computer and tv for years. I heard great things about digital phone, which, eh, it’s ok. Clarity is not so great, even with a 5.8MH phone which is brand new.
That’s not my problem though.
We have a security system for our home, and that was installed 12yrs ago and is hooked up to the telephone line.
Apparently when cable goes out for just a second, our alarm sounds. It happened last night at 2am.
One box (alarm system) is located in my son’s closet which is locked and I do not have a key. I would assume that is where the hook up is for the telephone cable.
Second box is in my other son’s room, which is the electrical supply.
The company that installed the system is no longer in business.
My question is:
How do I get into the metal 20" X 15" box to disconnect the telephone line and which line is it , and how to do this without interupting the normal functions of alarm. It is not monitored.

That would all depend on the panel you have. What you have happening is TLM (Telephone Line Monitor) is set up to trip the siren when the system is armed. I am assuming the alarm is armed when the problem occurs. No filter will fix that problem.
As far as fixing it goes, you would be best off contacting a local alarm company that is willing to service a local (Non monitored) alarm system. Depending on the panel and brand and if the installers code is locked out or not it should be fairly easy. You could also fool the system into thinking there is a phone line by introducing 12VDC to it. Carefull though, if you don’t know anything about electonics you might just fry something. Check on top of the panel for the key.
If you send me a message with the model number I might be able to guide you through programming it out. Once again, depending on if the installers code has been changed or locked out.
I don’t know about getting in the box and to me that sounds like it could be a little dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing.
Your service provider should be able to assist you with a "filter" that prevents the phone line from scrambling the alarm system.

Hmm, your alarm system probably need professional help.
Physically disconnecting the phone line from the security system won’t stop the alarm from freaking out. The system is probably set to alarm when it senses the absence of phone line current after a certain period of time. It shouldn’t alarm for a dropout of one second, so maybe your VoIP phone adaptor is acting up by not providing sufficient current for the security system to detect phone line presence.
Since you say the system is not being monitored, it would take an expert to deprogram the phone line monitor function from the system.
