I can’t say there really is a "best" computer security software even for the ones that cost money. It really all comes down to user preference. The major companies are all basically the same in terms of protection.
AVG offers a full virus protection software with automatic updates for free. I have also heard good things about Avast.
Are you currently in college? Most schools have licenses for students to use a major brand. My college offered McAfee to all students for free.
A last resort for free protection is to keep an eye on the Sunday ads. My current protection is Norton and it was free after a mail in rebate from Staples.

/thread.
billy your wrong theres many good software and packed together are the best. just since the terms of yahoo answers does not allow me to say said programs. OP will just have to find them themselfs.
Hate to break it to you but there is no " BEST " of PC security, or anything that ever existed for that matter.
There is no one software that will protect you from everything, and using several different programs causes more problems. I used Avast! and SpyBoy together and would download tons of stuff (alot of pirating, but I don’t anymore :P). Never got a virus or spyware, and the times when I was about to they would alert me and I could get away just fine.
Take a look around the internets and find out what might work best for you.
I recommend Comodo Security Suite to my customers, it’s free and it is good.
http://www.comodo.com and look for Free Security Suite.
The other thing I recommend is using Firefox with the NoScript plugin. This disables flash, java script, java, Siverlight etc unless you specifically enable it for a website. This will stop most of the malicious stuff that comes down.
There are no FREE computer security
but i use ‘Bullgaurd security’. It pretty much covers all of the bugs a computer can get, they have 24/7 live support and guarantee any problem resolved within one hour
