Zone alarm isn’t REALLY necessary if you have windows firewall enabled. They do basically the same thing, just zone alarm is a little more configurable and a couple extra options. Delete it, you’ll be fine.
If you disable ZoneAlarm, as opposed to uninstalling it, then you should turn on the Windows Firewall from the Security Center.
Getting a virus isn’t just a matter of your being careful (though that certainly is something to aspire to), but can sometimes happen just because you’re connected to the internet. That’s why you need a firewall.
Maybe it would be a good idea to learn how to use Zonealarm so that it allows the things you want to do.
I think that as long as you have a good firewall, you should be okay. You always have to be careful though because it’s a constant struggle for software companies to keep up with the people who try and breach computer safety programs.
Windows firewall is not a true firewall and protects you only from a few rouge packets incoming. Is not designed to protect your personal data from leaving your PC without your permission. (This is why you need to turn off Windows firewall). As you can only have one firewall.
I have used the free version of zone alarm for over ten years and never has the firewall prevented me from installing any thing that I desire. If the URL is dangerous or rouge, zone alarm will bock, but you can open zone alarm control center from your tray, open programs on the left upper hand side and "allows", all files that you see that are "blocked". Simple just changes the zone alarm permission.
Without a true firewall you will open yourself to thousands of rouge packets in a few minutes of being on the net.
