Is it haram (or makruh) to keep dogs as at home, for security purpose or pet?
Is it true that angels would not go to your house if you have one?

No you can keep dogs for hunting, herding animals, if you’re blind, if you’re deaf, or for protection only. Haraam to keep it as a pet. Yes the Angels won’t enter your house if there are pictures or dogs in the house.
It is interesting to know that dogs are mentioned in the Quran 5 times, not just once, 7:176, 18:18, 18:22 (three times). NO WHERE does God call the dogs dirty animals or give any indication that they should be avoided or treated the way many Muslims think they should. Actually the story of the people of the cave, in Sura 18, gives the indication. that we should appreciate.
The people of the cave, 3, 5 or 7 were mentioned in the Quran and every time God insists on letting us know that their dog was there with them. Their story can be as complete without the mention of the dog, but God did, Why ?
God is telling us these righteous people were in the cave with their dog, if it is not righteous to have dogs, God would not have told us that story in which the dog has to be remembered as being there. We have to know the quality of God, if we were to worship Him correctly. When God says something He means it, and when he does not, he means it as much. If God did not curse the dog and call it all kinds of name, it is because God wants us to know that He created that beautiful creature and He expected us to make all use and companinonship with that animal that accompanied these righteous people of the cave.
Fabricated hadiths contradict the Quran. Many of them narrated by Abu Hurayra. Abu Hurayra, whose name is translated as , father of the little cat, hated dogs and women and from his mouth came many hadiths that insulted women and cursed the dogs and make them undesirable animals that need to be avoided and in other hadiths killed.
These fabricted hadtihs were falsely attributed to the prophet Muhammed who cannot utter but the teachings of the Quran and would only be a living example of the Quran itself. The prophet Muhammed who lived by the Quran could not have done anything but agree with the Quran,not contradict it. God gave us a great criteria to judge His truth form the man-made fabrications;
"….If it were from othr than God, they would have found in it numerous contradictions." 4:82
How do we know that Muslims are not forbidden to be around dogs? We look at God’s word, at the Quran. In the story of the men of the cave in Sura 18, it becomes clear that God sees dogs as part of men’s lives.
18:18 "You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst."
Hadith tells us that angels won’t enter a room where there is a dog. That means that for 309 years that the sleepers were in the cave, no angel ever entered. Yet God says "We turned them…." The use of "we" clearly indicates the participation of angels. There is absolutely no reason to mention the dog as part of this story, except to make it clear to future generation that dogs are permitted to live among people, right "in their midst." And 18:22 clearly shows that the dog was counted right along with the believers.
"Some would say, they were three; their dog being the fourth, while others would say, Five; the sixth being their dog, as they guessed. Others said, seven, and the eighth was their dog. Say, My Lord is the best knower of their number. Therefore, do not argue with them; just go along with them. You need not consult anyone about this."
There are books of the Bible that don’t make it into all Bibles. They are recognized by some sects but not by others. These are called "apocrypha." One such book is entitles "Tobit." It is a wonderful narrative. It reminds me of Luqmaan in the Quran. A faithful man counsels his son to worship God always, to be righteous, to give charity and never begrudge the gift, to be humble and to be fair in all business dealings. In this book of Tobit, the son, Tobias, goes off on a journey to help his father. God sends with him an angel in the form of a man, and chapter 5 verse 16 says;
"So they went out and departed and the young man’s dog was with them." And as they return home, after all the adventure and good things that happen , in chapter: " After this Tobias went on his way, praising God because He had made his journey as success….So they went their way, and the dog went along behind them."
There is no other mention of the dog in the whole narrative. It is just like the people of the cave. There is no reason to mention the dog at all, except to show that it’s a perfectly natural thing to be accompanied by your dog. God certainly does not prohibit it.
God has given dogs qualities that make perfect companions and helpmates for humans. The fact that dogs like to be around people and like to please them makes them easy to breed for specific characteristics and to train for a variety of wonderful jobs. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes from the 5" tall, 6 pound Chihuahua to the Mastiff and St. Bernard which may reach 200 pounds. Some dogs are meant to simple be a companion to man, small enough to carry around and sit on your lap. Scientific studies have shown that just petting a dog can lower a person’s blood pressure. So their simple companionship is a gift from God.
Beyond that, dogs perform a vast array of wonderful skills. Dogs are excellent herders and guards of sheep and cattle. Some dogs have a natural desire to protect. Police and the military frequently make use of this attribute, using German Shepherds , Dobermans and Rottweilers in their work. Dogs are wonderful in search and rescue. This has gone on for hundreds of years, from the famous St. Bernard of Switzerland finding people lost in the snow and laying down with them to keep them warm (they did not carry a keg of brandy) to modern times, finding survivors in the rubble of earthquakes.
Dogs have always participated in the sporting world, as the Quran attests in 5:4
"They consult you concerning what is lawful for them; say, Lawful for you are all good things, including what trained dogs and falcons catch for you. You train them according God’s teachings. You may eat what they catch for you, and mention God’s name thereupon. You shall observe God. God is most efficient in reckoning."
Yet according to Hadith, anything a dog touches must be washed seven times, the final time in dust. That seems inconsistent with the Quran saying you may eat what they catch for you. The beautiful bird brought back proudly in the Retriever’s mouth would have to be washed seven times, finally in dust. It does not sound very appetizing.
Recently man has come to rely on the dog more for companionship and affection than anything else. And out of that has come the use of dogs as eyes, ears, arms and legs for the disabled. To watch a seeing-eye dog guide a blind person down a busy street or through a crowded mall is a truly inspiring sight. It allows freedom and independence that this person would not otherwise have.
For a deaf person, a hearing-ear dog allows him or her to live alone without fear. The dog can be taught to alert his owner to the doorbell, telephone, alarm clock, and smoke alarm. A deaf couple can respond to their baby crying, for the dog will alert them. The world is not so frightening and they do not feel so alone, with a dog to hear for them.
For someone in a wheelchair, or someone whose arthritis won’t allow them to bend or lift, a dog can provide so much help and comfort. The simple act of picking up a dropped objet is something we take for granted. But to a disabled person, it might mean the humiliation of always having to ask for help. With a service dog by his side, that same person achieve independence and self-esteem. The dog is happy to get the pen or the keys or the pill bottle, even if it rolls under a table.
The positive qualities of the dog-loyalty, dependability, tolerance- have been recognized throughout history. Mark Twain said "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." And Lord Byron’s epitaph for his dog says "[He] possessed beauty without vanity, strength without insolence; courage without ferocity; and all the virtues of man without his vices."
And of course the most important trait of all, which Byron missed, is complete and total submission to God for all his life. I think we’d be well served to share our lives more with these wonderful creatures, and learn more from them.
"The heavens and the earth are full of proofs for the believers. Also in your creation, and the creation of all the animals, there are proofs for people who are certain." (45:3-4)
"Among His proofs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the creatures He spreads in them. He is able to summon them, when He wills." (42:29)
It is haram to keep a dog indoors. And yes angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog.
you must keep them outdoors.
You can have dogs only if they are service dogs that help handicap or to protect your home then its ok to have them other wise then its haram to keep them.
no its not haram but just makruh ..i think so..coz my neighbour who is muslim also keep a dog outside of his house in a security purpose…he kept the dogs in a cage..cant touch the dog or gosok it..coz dog is still a binatang haram
Not really mentioned in the Quran, except the Quran (5:04) says we can use dog for hunting if we release the dog (or other hunting animal) after saying Allah’s name.
This is from Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 39, Number 515:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger said, "Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily, unless the dog is used for guarding a farm or cattle." Abu Huraira (in another narration) said from the Prophet, "unless it is used for guarding sheep or farms, or for hunting." Narrated Abu Hazim from Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "A dog for guarding cattle or for hunting."
Just be reminded that this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love dogs or regard dog as low class animal. As said in Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 40, Number 551:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Apostle said, "While a man was walking he felt thirsty and went down a well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The man said, ‘This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as that of mine. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for his (good) deed and forgave him." The people asked, "O Allah’s Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals?" He replied, "Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate."
I only know that having a dog as a pet brings a lot of happiness to the family, maybe she’s sent by the angels as a gift?
From the local pet magazines, in one issue a Malay vet had 3 dogs as pets (each cost around RM20k). He said that it’s not haram to have dog, as long as don’t touch it when it’s wet.
u can keep dogs for security purposes. but take care that they don’t come into the house. as they carry some diseases which transfer to humans..
I have a pet dog….. in my house. I’ve researched this subject before i converted. In my belief it is not wrong. But that is personal.
The hadith you posted partly goes further. It states:"
Narrated Abu Talha: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying; "angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)." (Book #54, Hadith #448)"
Now, i’ve been attacked by other Muslims who used that Hadith. If i questioned them about them having pictures of family members etc in their house, they most of the times had to back off, cause most of them do have family pictures or other pictures in their house. so to me it’s measuring with 2 measures.
Again, this is totally my personal opinion, i just go with the idea ‘if it is not condemned in the Qu’ran and hadith contradicts Qur’an, i’ll follow Qur’an.
I’m giving you a link to 2discourses that pretty well sum up my way of thinking! It are long articles, but worth the read i believe.

Peace,
Tiffy
yes it is haram to have a dog as a pet but it is okay if u keep the dog for a purpose such as watch dog. but dont let it in the house for no reason, keep it out.
and yes, there is an authentic hadith which forbids the muslims to keep a dog in house and this hadith also tells that angels will not enter such a home which has dogs.
well, my elder brothers once brought a puppy. i remember it vaguely because i was only three years old and i was so scared of dogs. thank God it died in a few weeks LOL.
No. not allowed. if for security purpose then keep it away from the actual house. in the garden i mean.
do u not read about the poverty and hunger the humans are facing today. so many kids die due to lack of simple basic medecine.
see if you can spend whatever u can on the needs of humans.
i pity people when i see them taking their dogs for a walk or to pee. would it not be far more better if they spent their energy and time on caring for their parents, relatives, or the needy people.
so please it is my earnest request. let the dogs be.
paying proper Zakat and having tawwakal will safe guard your property.
"once a man came running to a sahabiand said, ‘i saw your house in flames it is burning down. The Sahabi replied, " i cant be my house, i pay my zakaat with full honesty". later they came to know that it was the neighbours home burning.
the moral is, if you pay Zakat then have a solid belief that no harm will come to your things, and if atall you lose something, then remmember Allah swt is the best of the provider.
Salam!
Yes its Haram to Keep a dog as Pet, and Angels Do not enter in your House if you are having Pictures of Living things and Dogs.
But you can keep Dog for Security purposes and Hunting .
It is not haram if you keep them outdoor and keep your house pure. But about the angles, I don’t think they com to our house anyway. This is a very fantasy view to religion!
yes, i stuju(agree) with kunyit
its not allowed to keep dogs at home..coz angels dont enter the houses that hve dogs..for security purpose u can keep them outside….ALLAH knows better
yes..
it is haram…
i don’t have any
Jews, Women, Dogs and blacks.
These are the usual taboo in the Muslim world
Lol
I wonder why this is so ?
Once the Prophet Peace be upon him waited for Angle Gabrila to come visit him.. but the angle didnt come and the prophet kept wondering because this had never happened before… he searched around and found a puppy under a table and asked to remove it and wash the area..
the angle came then and when he was asked, he replied that angles do not visit home where there are pictures, and dogs….
so its very clear that you can keep it as protection if you need it for your live stock like sheep or camels… or outside your house to guard it…
I found this on an islamic website. I am pasting it here for your reference.
————————————–…
“A dog can be owned for purposes such as the following:
1. A trained dog for hunting. Remember in Islam we are only allowed to hunt for food; there is no such thing as hunting for fun, for we are not allowed to kill or torture animals or drive them out of their habitats for the fun of it.
2. A trained dog as a guide. This would be the case if a person is blind and he/she has no choice but to keep a dog for essential services. In this case, it is permissible for him/her to keep a dog inside the house once it has been trained for service, but it is still recommended that the dog have its own sleeping arrangement.
3. A dog trained for police duties.
4. A guard dog to guard houses or property.
5. A dog used by farmers to shepherd cattle and sheep.
We are, however, not allowed to keep a dog as a pet, since it is not a very clean animal. How often have you come across the nasty sight of dogs taken for a walk licking their own excrement? Isn’t it disgusting to see their owners kissing the mouth of such animals after such incidents as if nothing happened? Would you kiss the mouth of your own baby if he were to do the same? Think how many parasites and microbes may be hiding in their mouths.
If we ever come into contact with a dog’s saliva we must wash the spot seven times, the first of which should be with sand or dirt. It is also possible to use a bacterial soap instead of sand or dirt.
In conclusion: Don’t contemplate taking a dog home as a pet. If, however, you do need to keep a dog for any of the reasons given above, then you may do so. But take every precaution not to have contact with its saliva, and also arrange for a separate living space.”
