Is it true that more than one security protection on a system makes the computer run slower?
I was told that my computer is running reallllly slow at start up and shut down because I am running more than one security protection. If so and I take all but one off, am I more suspetible to viruses, trojens, etc.?

Yes it can make it run slow. You can not run 2 anti-virus programs or 2 firewalls at the same time. They will fight each other and cause weird things to happen. Here are the programs I use.
Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don’t have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.
Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download, update and run Spybot—http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don’t forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware—http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download SpywareBlaster—http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn’t scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
It’s main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
Those are some nice programs and free. Now lets clean it up a bit.
Download RegScrubXP–http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it’s original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Download CleanUp—http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/
Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!
Even one security software can make your puter run slower if you don’t have enough memory installed.
i dont know but we had norton internet security and it made our pc terrible and we took it of and now it runs fine
I had a question about more than one security protection also. I asked my security company if having more than one would harm my computer. The answer was that there are so many viruses, spyware, adware, etc., out there in the computer world, that it’s ok to have more than one, just don’t run them consecutively. They didn’t say one word about this slowing the computer down, and they’re experts, probably the biggest security company around. If you want to check further, call your internet service provider, e.g., AT&T, to see if they provide the security. If they don’t, ask them for the phone no. of the security company that provides it. Then just ask your question.
I run McAfee and Norton at the same time and come to think of it, my programs did seem sluggish at times. I would always get a a firewall security warning from Norton so in the end I uninstalled Norton.
To answer your question simply…
Yes it is true.
But you don’t need everything to load at start-up
I’d love to know what specific programs you are running so I can answer this properly, but just make sure you don’t have 2 programs doing the same thing.
If your running Norton anti-virus you may want to try McAfee as it uses alot less memory. I also use McAfee for a Firewall it’s simple and works very well. As far as Trojans and spyware I reccomend using Ad-aware it’s free and I run it the first of each month and it keeps my pc fast. try it it’s free

Yes, having any at all slows down your computer. But it’s well worth it to have at least one good one.
it doesn’t work the way that the more security programs you have, the more protected you are. actually one antivirus and one antispyware is enough for one computer as these two programs do different jobs (prevents your computer from different types of infections). if you run two antispyware they most likely will conflict with each other so your computer speed will be really down.
That may not be the only reason. Slow computer has many reasons for being slow….! Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html
