Norton Internet Security Suite is Killing My Computer! What Do I Do?
Ever since I installed Norton Internet Security Suite 2007, my computer has been barely functional. Startup now takes ten minutes, launching an application takes a few more, and it constantly freezes up for a few minutes while chugging away on some Norton task.
I don’t want to remove it and have no protection, but this is unacceptable. Is there a way to configure it for bare-bones virus protection that is dramatically less resource intensive? I have a Norton account for another year, is switching to a different product a better alternative? Please be specific in your response, and thanks for your help!

You’re going to get as many opinions as there are people who read and answer this, but basically most of us are going to tell you the same thing: Norton sucks. In a recent test, Norton failed to find many of the current viruses. The highest rated antivirus today is AVG 7.5, and it’s free.

If you decide not to keep using Norton, DO NOT try to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs or you will find yourself with a bigger mess than you already have. Download and install the Symantec removal tool that removes all the Norton parts and pieces.

Unless you really want to get into trouble, leave the Comodo firewall alone and get ZoneAlarm if you don’t trust the XP firewall. Personally, I use the XP firewall and don’t have a problem doing so.
Antivirus does take lots of system memory.
You should have tried NOD32 2007 instead of Norton for lighter program.
yes get lighter programe. I use BitDefender 10.
avg is a good one as well. Norton just blows sorry but it does,
Norton is terrible because it is so heavy on the software. Use another one like Avast! or AVG. Free and much "lighter".
Friends don’t let friends use norton!
Your machine is suffering from norton’s idea of what the computer should be and do, honestly your best bet is to remove it completely. If you go to your add/remove programs, click on norton and select (if it is still there) remove.
If you are going to reinstall it use a custom install and don’t let it put in all the extra junk. Basically you want a firewall and antivirus, you don’t need security centres and all the rest.
If you decide to uninstall it completely and not put it back, there are many FREE programs that do the same with a lot less.
Comodo firewall is a free program, http://www.comodo.com/ and it works well. Zone Alarm is another commonly used FREE program available.
Norton Internet Security is not a recommended software. Norton is the best anti-virus software out there for now, but there is a company knockin on their door, I’ll get into that later. The Norton software you should get next time is Norton Systemworks. It is the best. It doesnt use all this memory people speak of. I run norton and spysweeper scans all the time together and I have NO problem. Now on to the software I just mentioned Spysweeper. It is the best spyware program out there with out a doubt. It just added virus protection to its software too, which probally makes it the best, but time will tell about that. Like I said I use both together and have NO problems. Norton systemworks is what you really need and if you want to add on to that add spysweeper and you will not have to worry about spyware or viruses.
