I appreciate that there have already been a raft of related questions regarding this but i don’t feel my particular question has been covered. However apologies in advance.
Tank cycling : I set up a new cold freshwater aquarium about 6 weeks ago now and have made every effort to do things correctly, researching as much as I can beforehand and during the set-up (even though it can be difficult with so much conflicting advise!)
I have a 90ltr Nano with a built in back filter box which I have a selection of filtration media, pump sucking in water and a powerhead pumping it back out.
I let the tank cycle for around 2 weeks and to be honest with a little impatience added one 1.5 inch fancy goldfish even though I knew the water quality test results we a less than desirable, however they weren’t so bad as to cause too much alarm. One week later I added two Blackmoors and a week after that another small fancy goldfish.
I have been monitoring regularly and have been doing 25-30% water changes every week (I add Nutrafin AquaPlus and Nutrafin Cycle each time and will actually be switching to RO water this week). Sometimes with one or even two 10% water changes in between. However, the results I have been recording have not been in tune with what I believe to be the ‘typical’ cycling levels.
PH has been steady at circa 8.2 (is this a little high?). Nitrate recently spiked at about 1ppm but has now gone back to 0ppm. Nitrate, after been 0ppm for the first two weeks gradually moved through 10ppm to 20ppm and has remained there. Ammonia is the real issue. Since day one until now it’s been at 4ppm (sometimes verging on 8ppm) irrespective of anything I do. This profile just makes no sense!
i can’t believe that a 30% water change would not show any change in ammonia readings.
I even added a second filter/pump (Fluval U1) inside the tank to bolster up the main filter (not a bio-filter).
Please help! Am I wrong in my thinking? It’s been 6 weeks now and the tank just doesn’t seem to be cycling? Am I just being too impatient?
Importantly all four fish seem to be very happy in their environment thus far - especially playing with the air stone and swimming (purposely!) into the powerhead flow stream
They are fed small pinches of flakes twice daily and they clear the lot within 2 minutes. No food waste is left in the tank that obvious to see.
Many thanks in advance
Thanks for the responses peeps but I’m not sure I agree with a couple of things and just wanted to clarify some more.
The Nano tank doesn’t have a built in filter as such. It’s just a segregated section of the tank which allows you to add your own filtration media. A pump sucks water from the tank and pushes it out of a flute at the top onto the first media, then down into the next and the next etc then finally pushed back out into the tank via another pump/powerhead. I have 3 layers of synthetic wool (diff. grades), then two bags of ceramic tubes then activated carbon gravel and dead rock at the bottom. So I wouldn’t consider this to be a poor built-in filter if you know what I mean (I may still be wrong!). As for number of fish, I am just following a typically given rule of 1 inch per gallon. I have circa 5 inches of fish in a circa 23 US (20UK) gallon tank so am not sure why my four fish is too many?? I can pretty much agree with all other
Thanks for the RO water advice!
