Smoke alarm problem PLEASE HELP :(?
Okay so i’m 16 and it’s like 12 in the morning, i came home earlier and tried to put a new battery in our smoke alarm a friend gave me because we didn’t have any that fit it, so i went to put it in and the fire alarm started beeping. As my dad was asleep i took it out immediately and got into bed (my mum was downstairs, i assumed she’d come up and put the battery in and sort it all out) instead she went straight to bed, and when i asked if she’d put it in she just told me to go to sleep! I’m now so worried as to what to do?! What if the house burns down and it could have all be avoided if the battery was put in?!

Power53 is right. Go to the alarm and put the battery in NOW. By the time your Dad wakes up the beeping should be done. Tell him to go back to sleep.
I’m sure different smoke alarms act differently, but I have had alarms that whenever I installed a battery it too would sound loud for a few seconds and then quit. Everything was OK. Give it another try sometime when you don’t mind the noise for a few seconds. Good luck.
It is a possibility the battery is only used for backup. Without the battery do you still have a light on the alarm? If so the alarm can wait until morning for the battery.
