My Toshiba satellite L20 laptop stopped working (it’s dead). I want to try to get the data off the hard drive- have tried attaching it to another computer using a S-ATA/IDE cable: it seems to be "turning" and it assigns it a drive letter but the bar that tells you how full it is is red (while the bars for my other drives are blue). The directories seem to be there but the files inside them seem to have disappeared or have become inaccessible (could this be a security problem?). Anyone got any good ideas/can point me in the right direction? Is all lost?

All the best

Ewan
I’ll do my best to answer nikkai, though i’m not massively clever with computery stuff: the drive is connected by serial ATA-USB2
the adapter is this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/IOMAX-SATA-Adapter-Power-Drive/dp/B001A5SK56
I guess it is set as a slave. I haven’t explored the drive (do you mean actually mechanically opened it or just hunted through the files?)

Okay, I have three programs that were installed on my laptop without my knowledge or consent and I would like them gone. All three are those fake anti-virus protection scams. One is called Anti-malware Doctor. The second is called Security Suite.

One doesn’t seem to even claim a name. I can not get rid of them through the control panel, in safe mode or otherwise. As you probably know, system restore is not possible in safe mode. In regular start-up, one or all three of these programs is blocking system restore. If I attempt to open it it is closed instantly.

I will not wipe my hard drive, I have very important information on it that I need saved.

The way I see it, I have three options. Fix it, don’t use it, use it anyway.

Not using it would inconvenience me. I need my own functioning computer for school and work. Using it anyway will eventually have undesirable consequences, I am sure, and with all the fucking windows popping up it is an entirely unpleasant experience. Fixing it would be optimal.

So, how do I remove these harmful programs and keep everything else?

Thank you so much.
Ran the malwarebyte in safe mode, found stuff, deleted it, it said restart, did (not in safe mode) problems persisted. Ran mwb again in safe mode, found stuff (only three that time) deleted it, it said restart, did (not in safe mode) problems persisted. Running it for a third time, so far has not resolved my issues.
the third time it found two things, deleted them, did not tell me to restart, remained in safe mode. I am now running it for a fourth time, and I intend to continue to do so until it finds nothing upon finishing a scan. After that, if problems still persist, I will try the task manager thing someone suggested.

However, even if that works, I will still have two out of three to get rid of. :/

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I will just keep moving down the list with trial and error until one catches them all. :) Got to the point where mwb in safe mode found nothing. Problems still persist, no improvement whatsoever. Tried the task manager thing. Right clicked on security suite, when to process, there was no option to locate file. Wtf now?

now i want to install a new window .. because my laptop is new .. so i really don’t have any data worth saving.. i have back up disks .. so i am just wandering how can i do this?

I need to send my laptop in for repairs because the ac power cord won’t stay plugged in. My current battery is completely void of charge, so I’m not able to power up my laptop. Therefore I can’t backup my data prior to sending in my laptop. I would like to purchase a new battery so that I can perform the necessary backups. I can only do this if the new battery comes already charged.

I am very familiar with Windows XP installations. Here is my problem. I have a laptop that failed to boot. I need to get data off the harddrive. There is no option to run a repair install as is the case with some installations. This leaves the recovery console. However after I replaced system, sam, default, and security files, it won’t let me into recovery console anymore. It says password not correct.

If you boot from CD, set up windows normally, choose partition to install on, if I select the already existing partition without deleting it, it says that it will install a new xp on the same partition. Will this allow me to boot and access data or will it still erase the old data?

Thanks for your help
Thanks, so I will be able to retrieve pictures and other things I have on there? thanks again

I’m trying to install the most current version of Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 (version 15.3, I believe). Now it SAYS it is completely Vista certified, but when I try to install it, it says that a "fatal error in the OS has prevented installation" or something like that. But this is a BRAND NEW laptop, never been used for anything, just bought it TODAY. Sometimes, I get another error message saying that "You must be an administrator to install this software"…etc, but I am already on the administrator account.

Anyone else have this problem? Or maybe you’re just really smart and know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

HIthere,

I just recently bought a new HDD for my laptop, as well as an external 700GB samsung HDD.

I am trying to figure out how to

A) transfer my info to my new HDD and
B) how to back up my data, so that if my HDD were to fail, I could just load all the data from the backup onto a new one.

I can’t hookup both, it’s not hooked up like in a normal pc.

Will the windows backup utility thing do this? will it make it so that if my HDD fails, I can use the backup data?

I’m a little consfused, cause i’ve seen many products out there that make an IMAGE of it, does Windows do this too?

Cheers for the help!
PS any free programs you can recommend?

I need to take my laptop in to get repaired. I have a lot of sensitive/personal information on it. What would be the best way to protect my privacy? I thought of putting a password on my user account and creating a guest account for the repair shop. I am still running windows XP, I’m not sure how strong XP’s protection
is.

To back up, remove, then restore all the data would be too time consuming for me.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey there… So…I had JUST gotten my laptop fixed (ie an overhaul to get me a new OS altogether), went on vacation to a Marriott and while I couldn’t get a wireless signal which they promised they had, the desk in the hotel had an ethernet wire so I connected to the internet like that.

I used the PC 4 different days there, shut it down and came back home. Now, when I try to go on the computer, the screen gives me a black and grey DOS screen telling me there is "a hardware issue" and wont’ even get to the "account" screen for windows.

What happened?

More importantly, how do I fix it??? :)

The laptop is only about 4 years old, its a Toshiba, and we take really good care of it Yes, it’s got antivirus and spyware protection, but again, the screen says "hardware" issue and I don’t think a virus can screw up the actual hardware, right? :P
