I want to make a full backup of my laptop as it is now, and I have an external (USB) hard drive to do it on. How can I do this? Do I need some sort of 3rd party software?? How can I get my OS/data back to the laptop?

First off, let me say the message prompts are on the wrong end of Windows XP backup. What good is it to know that you shouldn’t use a FAT32 partition, or that you don’t have a floppy disk drive, AFTER you’ve made the backup file? Would it really hurt to have messages like that BEFORE the file is created??
Anyways…I have my backup image on an external hard drive. The laptop DOES NOT have a floppy drive, so I was unable to create an ASR diskette. Is this disk absolutely necessary? Can I still recover the data from my backup? It is an "All Information On My Computer" backup…does that make a difference?

My laptop got infected by this fake spyware and i cant get rid of it. It covered my background with a black screen and all i can see is my task bar and the only thing that works is my internet. I tried to download spyware doctor to get rid of it but i cant install it once it downloads bc the black screen covers it up. Im sorry if my explanation is a little confusing but if anyone knows how to get rid of this please answer.

I have forgotten back up data in my HP pavilion dv6 laptop with Vista operating system and attempted for OS recover (F11), unfortunately i lost my data. Any help or guidance on recovering data is really great.

my laptop had virus. I think since I go to facebook I get virus.
so, I put the set up disk in and and I think I got rid of virus.
but, I don’t see my security system that was avast anywhere in control panel.

I’ve seen factory installed laptops that come with this. In the event of problems they can boot and restore to the ‘factory preset’ … which restores the backup from a hidden recovery partition (overwriting all existing data).

What sort of software would I use or how would I go about creating such a thing?

(I’ve got a laptop without it, it’s a super-light variety with no CD drive and so re-installs are a pain)

I’ll mention that I prefer not to use external backup. I specifically want to duplicate the hidden recovery partition functionality (to maintain the super-light aspect of the 1.6pound laptop)

And I’m looking for a walkthrough on using Norton Ghost (or whatever) on achieving this.
AND I do have access (while at home) to the computer using network / floppy and even (once) by removing the harddrive from the laptop and plugging it into my desktop (though I’d rather not do that again if possible).

With DSL is it normal to have maybe 2000 inbound access attempts in 3-4 days with Zone Alarm Firewall on High? I recently put my Zone Alarm firewall on High and have 1950 intrusion blocked since last thursday when I put both securities on High and the firewall has blocked almost 2000 access attempts. I also put Zonealarm on my roommates laptop, she has Wireless and in the same amount of time shes had less than 200. What is the difference between DSL and wireless and is the the amount of attempts Im getting normal? Im just curious if theres a reason this might be.

Do I still need a program to keep me safe from adware and other types of propaganda or does Zone Alarm do it all?

Also, I want to protect my lap top with Zone Alarm…do I need to pay again for the laptop?

Currently on my laptop I have AVG anti-virus…should I also install Zone Alarm on it or delete AVG first?

my external hard drive was plugged into my desk top, it said it downloaded the stuff, i plugged it into my laptop, and i don’t speak the language that it says what with the numbers and the file names. how can i make my laptop download the filed on the hard drive.
it is a Simple Tech 320 gb with fabrik ultimate backup.

My laptop is dead…. the ac adapter pin is dead and the battery is all drained out. So i cannot turn on the laptop at all. However, there are some important files on the laptop that I need to get.
Is there any way I can get the files from the dead laptop.

I have a computer security/privacy question. Here is the situation:

My mother takes her laptop to work, where her employees use it, and she also brings it home, where family members use it. Everything related to the computer (internet connection, computer, software) is registered to my mother.

After an employee retired, my mother accessed the employee’s work email account to get information about a project. She found email correspondence between the employee and a reporter for a local newspaper. The employee had commented on one of the reporter’s articles online at the newspaper website and then the employee followed up with an email to the reporter.

The reporter sent a strange email back, calling the employee by my mother’s nickname and saying that the employee was hiding her true identity.

There is nothing in the former employee’s email account or email that mentions my mother. The email account was registered to the former employee; the only thing my mother had to do with the situation is that the employee used her computer to send the email.

We’re all rather concerned that the reporter identified my mother from the employee’s email or website comment and we’re wondering how he could have done this. We’re thinking that he might have been able to track the IP address of the computer from either the website comment or the email and find out who it is registered to.

Can anyone suggest whether/how a website comment or email can be used to trace the owner of a computer? Is this easy to do? We’re wondering if we should forbid employees from using the computer for personal activities because we don’t want to be responsible for things that they’re doing online. We’re also wondering if we should be more careful about posting online, in case anonymity can’t be maintained.

how can I find it without paying Linksys……….I had it when I had my last

My mom is retired and goes on many vacation trips. Her house has been broken into 6 times where the neigbor hood she lives at. I live 30 miles away from her and offer to watch her house via internet. Now I want to know how can I set up a spy cam in the front yard facing the front house seeing all who come on the property? I am on a budget and need to know what to buy in order for me to open my laptop and check every so often. Also here are some things I found out about. a PC video capture that would go in to my laptop. A SSc-183 security camera SONY. Now how can both of those work. Will I need to have some kind of box that will link that camera to that PC video capture? Thank for your advice.

ok i have a built in cam in my new laptop and my sister keeps going on here and doing stuff she shouldn’t and i can never catch her doing it to prove it so i put on video surveillance on my cam but as soon as you exit out the program ( youcam) it turns the webcam off, is there any way to keep it on as a motion sensor or something without the program open or is there different software that can do this???

p.s- if possible is there a way to look at the actual computer screen too??

I have an external hard drive that has many years of photos, movies, games etc.

I just purchased a new laptop and need to get some stuff off of it. Last time i plugged it into my computer, my virus protection lit up and it contained a 1 or 2 viruses. I quickly unplugged the laptop and let the program delete or quarantine them.

Now I need to go back into that hard drive and either delete the viruses any extract my data.

I am running windows 7.

Suggestions?
