My cable modem light runs all the time, like it’s got data moving. I have a cordless router with wep security and firewall and Norton anti virus. Might be nuthin’ but the modem data light is always going so it makes me suspicious.
Its an old router it doesn’t have better security.

Recently asked a question and was told that if I have a router, it is impossible to hack into my computer even if another person has my IP address. Are there any other positives when dealing with routers? Can anything negative come from it? I plan on adding a password so that no one steals my service via WiFi, but anything beyond that? Or is it just a smart investment with no cons, really?

p.s. I only own one computer

I couldn’t seem to configure my new computer to get an Internet connection like all the other computers in my home network. I already have the WEP key but it doesn’t seem to work. My new computer runs on Vista, and the other computers at home that have Internet connection run on XP. I’ve looked on a few other websites and couldn’t seem to find the solution specific to my problem. Any ideas you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
First of all, I would like to say thanks to all those who shared their thoughts and worked within the info that I provided earlier. For those who need to get additional info, the router for the home network is a Westell Model 2200. The new computer has a Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter. There is a 26-character alphanumeric code that I enter when I try to manually connect to the Internet (is that the WEP key?), but sometimes, when I try to make a connection, the system doesn’t even ask me to enter this code.

I have a router but cant find its security code or pass phrase!!! BUT the router is connected to some computers in my house….. How do I find the security code or pass phrase????

Please I need help! It’s really frustrating! My router is working fine but for some reason my computer wont accept it because it doesnt match the computers setting. Help!

how can I find it without paying Linksys……….I had it when I had my last
printer but it "disappeared" and now, while the router [wireless] will send data from
the internet to my laptop, my replaced, new, HP printer will not sync with the router–I have to give the
printer the codes…….my router’s cd is corrupt; have asked for a replacement;
any other options?

I have a security camera connect to a router with an IP address of (192.168.1.122) assigned by the router (192.168.1.1). It’s also assigned Port: 8000 with TCP/UDP checked. I can connect to the cameras through a computer on the network, but when I go home and try to connect through the internet, it’s a no go. Can’t figure out why? Any settings I might be missing?
I have software for my computer at home to view it.

I just moved into a new apartment and the router here has all of the fancy security stuff on it and I don’t think my old adapter can handle it (my laptop will connect, but not my desktop, so I know it works). It says that it has a WPA-P2K network authentication with AES data encryption. What kind of adapter do I need, 64 bit, 128 bit, WPA, WPA2?…

My power tends to go out for just a second during bad weather. I’d like a UPS to keep my DVR and router on during those brief outages, since they take several minutes to reboot. Doesn’t seem like I’d need a lot of capacity for that, and I want to avoid a UPS that generates a lot of heat or noise. The ability to disable the alarm is a big plus.

zone alarm has an operating system firewall in its program to see what program is using or hijacking another program, then why the fuck does zone alarm itself hijack other programs it hijacked bearshare and after that said bearshare is trying to
steal my bank card, dont use this firewall, use comodo as
a matter of fact i think the xp firewall is better than zone alarm
when i researched both logs xp firewall blocked way more
intrusions than zone alarm, zone alarm only blocked my router
and called that a high severity intrusion, this is crap the only
positive thing about this free trial is it found 1 virus on my pc
that avast couldnt find , but really thats kaspersky because
zone alarm uses them.

I have 2 computers with Linksys network cards, which receive internet from a 2WIRE177 DSL modem. My computer recently ran a ChkDsk, (I also did a virus scan) and when i signed back on i couldn’t access my network. It shows up with a strong signal in range, but I can’t connect. My other computer, however, conects with no problem, so it’s not the router or network. I’ve tried reseting the DSL modem, restarted my comp., did a system restore, uninstalled Zone Alarm, and also tried resetting the TCP. I think something got deleted, or my settings got messed up. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks.
I already tried ipconfig/release and renew in command line. It cannot complete it because it says "media disconnected".

I have an IBM Thinkpad Z60m which has an interated built in WiFi antenna. I am current using it with a 802.11g connection with a 128bit WEP key protection. However I was given another Linksys 54G PCMCIA card today, I was able to install it successfully but both wireless connections seems to be on its own. Can I collaborate these 2 connections into one, and would that theortically means I could double the connection speed to 54Mbps x 2 = 108Mbps? I am using one router though, it is the Asus WL-530. Or would it be impossible, since the router will split the data into halves and sent 28Mbps to each of the two connections instead. If so is it possible to dedicate a particular task to a particular connection, such as Bittorrent to connection A and internet browsing/streaming to connection B? Thanks for reading and even bigger thanks for helping me out!!!

I walked into my roommates room due to fact my internet connect (WIFI) was fading in and out. I was also trying to do math hw that was due at mid night next day. No problem, Then i thought might be router missing up and then same problem found out. I found out my roommate installed surveillance equipment without my knowledge in his room. I was just going to unplug his router so i could get my homework done. We both have separate leases with apartments but shared resources ……water…electric..etc. I think the only reason he filed the charges due to him wanting to move out day 1. I think he never wanted to move here in first place.
Also, forgot to tell you that he has evidence i went in his room. I told him by text message and his D life camera’s took still pictures. I just walked in his room then walked back out shut the door.

Ok I need some serious help with this issue.

SCENARIO:
Connected Lynksys Router to XP machine and Modem. Software CD that came with it would not load in CD Rom and failed to connect to internet.
Ran update, found Lynksys software and installed it. Now I have internet after running the setup on XP.

Put CD in Vista and ran setup, but again it would not recognize the software. Used windows networking to find internet connection. Connected to Network then Vista restarts.

Did a restore and got rid on internet connections. Vista is working, performed the following:

Setting namespace security using WMI Control
The WMI Control provides one way to manage namespace security. You can start the WMI Control from the command prompt using this command:
wmimgmt
On Windows 9x or Windows NT4 computers that have WMI installed, type this command instead:
wbemcntl.exe
Alternatively, you can access the WMI Control and the Security tab by doing the following:
1. Right-click on My Computer and click Manage.

2. Double-click Services and Applications and then double-click WMI Control.

3. Right-click WMI Control and then click Properties.

4. In the WMI Control Properties dialog box click the Security tab.

5. A folder named Root with a plus sign (+) next to it should now be visible. Expand this tree as necessary to locate the namespace for which you want to set permissions.

6. Click the Security button. A list of users and their permissions appears. If the user is on that list, modify the permissions as appropriate. If the user is not on the list, click the Add button, and add the user from the location (local machine, domain, etc.) where the account resides.

Same result, tried this:

1. Start -> Right-click on "Computer" -> Manage
2. Double click "Services and Applications"
3. Right-click on "WMI Control" and select "Properties" -> select "Security" at the top
4. Select the CIMV2 directory in the root tree and click on "Security" at the bottom
5. Again ensure that your user account has full administrative rights
6. Select your user account and click on "Advanced"
7. On the permissions tab again select your user account and click "Edit"
8. At the top here you’ll see your network path as "Name" and underneath you’ll see "Apply to:" -> Set this to "This namespace and subnamespaces"

Same result. Vista is added on XP network but anytime Vista tries to access internet it restarts.

These are some event errors I get on vista:

dcom got error "1068"attempting to start the service netprofm with arguments ""inorder to run the server: a47979d2-c419-11d9-a5b4-001185ad2b89

unable to initialize the security package kerberos for server side authentication the data field contains the error number.

event filter with query "select*from_instancemodificationevent within 60 where targetinstance isa"win32_processor" and target instance.load percentage >99"could not be activated in namespace "//./root/cimv2" because of error 0×8004003 events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

and I got plenty more in the event viewer.

If anyone has any info on this please let me know.
If you are more than willing to help send me an email with details or ask for more info.

Someone in my Apartment has been using my Wireless signal. They have even reconfigured my Router once. I have changed the password but I am looking for info on how to secure the wireless signal.

I can’t hardwire my PC to the router because of problems with my Local connection so the description on how to do it in the manual wont work.

I run Vista so if anyone has set up security for a Linksys WRT54G please instruct me or guide me to a site that will help.

The data from Linksys won’t help because I can’t connect to the Router via the cable.

Thank you for any help.
Do I have to configure anything on the PC itself?

I do not know much about computers. But I just bought a laptop and my dad said they have a router but my brother could never get a connection. He said it might be the frequency from our security camera? Is this possible. I just think my brother installed it wrong.
