Here’s how I define good. It should do a good job filtering out viruses, spyware and warning me of malicious sites. It should be simple to use and not be a resource hog. It should be affordable.

What’s a good choice given these criteria?

The question is about the following information which was obtained from a library’s website about the free wi-fi internet they provide:
"Is the library’s wireless network secure?
The library’s public access wireless network is not secure. The library’s wireless network does not offer firewall protection, anti-virus protection, or data encryption. Data sent to or from your device can potentially be captured by someone else, and data you download (email or other files) could contain viruses, malicious code, or spyware, among other security risks. The library assumes no responsibility for the safety of your equipment or data while using the library’s network (wired or wireless). We recommend that you not transmit sensitive information (credit card data, passwords, etc.) using the library’s wireless network and that you have firewall and anti-virus software installed on your equipment. For more information about security:"

So my question is this:
If you use the internet at all, you will need to type in your password for your email. So does this mean that if you are using wi-fi like mentioned above, anyone in the vicinity with proper tools can simply grab all of the information you are typing? According to the statement above, it seems like when you use the wi-fi internet, it is just like plugging your computer into a big screen tv for everyone to see. The above statement makes it sound like anybody can just go to the library and steal everyones data that is being sent/received through there like a piece of cake. Is it really like that? If that is

Recently, an update gave my computer a virus and I was unable to detect it until my computer restarted. Afterwards, my computer could not get past the "Loading your personal settings…" pop up. I was able to get it back up after a while. All my documents were hidden and I eventually recovered them. This time around after putting up spyware and virus protection, I restarted my computer. Again! Everything is gone for sure this time, at least document wise. I still have some programs still floating around on the desktop. Other than that, everything is gone. What can I do? Months ago I had my dad take my computer to be fixed by his coworker. He was able to restore my computer completely but many of the factory settings have disappeared such as the complete restore options, new user accounts, etc.

When I accessed my computer the first time, it gave me a message that went something like "Your profile user is corrupt. Please contact your administrator."
I tried transferring all my information over to a new account, unfortunately the new account couldn’t even be opened due to the corrupted settings!

As of now, I know that 1) My user account is corrupt. 2) I cannot make a new user account and transfer my documents over, if I had any left. 3) I am in DIRE need of help.

Is there anyone who can help me? Thank you in advance..

Okay, so, I got the Internet Security 2010 spyware virus thing, so I downloaded the rkill and the Malware Bytes MBAM thingy, ran a search, and deleted what it told me to delete. Now the Internet Security thing doesn’t come up anymore - but it’s still showing a lot of websites as "restricted sites" and my desktop background still says "YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED: system has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed."

So, is this thing still on my computer? How do I get rid of it?

This collection agency keeps telling me I owe them money. I disagree. They claim I purchased a membership from their client. I did’nt. I got taken by a negative option marketing campaign. No way I would actually fork over some real money to buy this virtual product! I called them, they say I am not a member. The collection agency says they have the last 4 digits of my social security number, so they have proof I made the purchase. Every time I do a spyware scan, I find a cookie that is a data miner I did not know about. Would a data miner record my ss# as a bit of valuable information and give it to the spammer who put it in my computer?

Right now I have Avira AntiVir, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes & Spyware Blaster.

I have Comcast & I can download the Norton Security Suite for free, but I would have to uninstall all the programs I have on my computer now.

I know something is wrong with my computer because sometimes I keep getting all these pop-ups & I can’t control the mouse. I’ve ran all my programs & nothing is ever detected.

So I’m wondering should I uninstall all the programs on my computer & install the Norton Security Suite?

Comcast customers can now get Norton™ Security. It helps protect your computer, files and identity without slowing you down. Plus, get OnlineFamily.Norton to safeguard your kids online - 0 dollar value at no additional cost with your Comcast high-speed internet subscription.

Everytime I log on to the web, I look in one of my folders in the User Data folder and I keep getting an xml document called pmocntr[1].xml; when I finish browsing, I delete it but it always pops back up and have to keep deleting it at the beginning/end of each browsing session. All I know is that its some type of spyware; I look all over on the web and don’t see any additional info on it. I’d like to know how severe of a threat this is and what steps to take to delete it permanently. Any relevant feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

My laptop got infected by this fake spyware and i cant get rid of it. It covered my background with a black screen and all i can see is my task bar and the only thing that works is my internet. I tried to download spyware doctor to get rid of it but i cant install it once it downloads bc the black screen covers it up. Im sorry if my explanation is a little confusing but if anyone knows how to get rid of this please answer.

1. stop av.exe processor under task manager
2. delete C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Loca\av.exe
3. delete C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Local Setting\Application Data\av.exe
4. delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe (default) –>There’s 2 file. One is good and the other is bad. The bad one is (Secfile).

I got all of these information by running malwarebytes, however before taking any action, I go into my folders and I did not find any of these files. Sometimes I wonder if Malwarebytes is the start of this scandel. I installed it for remove some trojan and then deleted it and install avast. A few weeks later, I got 2010 vista security popping up. So I have to reinstall malwarebytes and malwarebytes detects the malwares and deleted it. Then I deleted the malwarebytes again, a couple days later I got the 2010 pop ups again. So I have to reinstall the Malwarebytes again. This time after malwarebytes scan everything, I want to see for myself if those files actually exit. Went into the directory and I can not find any of those files. It is like you actually need Malwarebytes to do the work. I used spybot the first time I have 2010 pop up and spybot did not find any 2010 vista security threat, instead it only found some xupiter spyware. After spybot found xupiter and not 2010 vista security thread, I have to run malware b/c I still have 2010 popping up, of course, malewarebytes found the files to 2010 vista security. So with that say, what’s your point of view on this?

It will not allow me to download other spyware or use the ones I already have installed. Any ideas?

I recently had to get a new computer due to the malware "MyWebSearch" which overtook my computer and eventually made registry changes that caused a massive loss of data. I purchased McAfee Security with its "Site Advisor" feature and was wondering if that is enough to keep out malware, spyware and other nasty things that I don’t want on my computer. Is it enough protection or is there something else I need to do. I cannot afford to purchase another computer for a very long time. Thanks.

When I got on my computer(1/29/08)after school I got on and it said that Virus Protection Not Found. It said I need a new antivirus program. My computer is being attack by Spyware.Ardakey,Trojan Horse,Downloader, and Downloader.MisleadApp PLEASE HELP ME! PLEASE HELP ME A.S.A.P

As Above, my mom was using our Gateway GM 5478 when she got a message that she had all these viruses trojans and spyware, yet we already use McAffee so we are already protected. Well Since I had just gotten up I really did not know what was going on, she clicked a box several times trying to remove the precieved threats…HOW DO I ELLIMINATE THE WHOLE PROGRAM FROM MY SYSTEM?

It will not even let me hit ctrl/alt/del to start the task manager or even open up windows explorer to download appropriate spyware to get rid of it. I’m out of ideas! Help is greatly needed!

My symantec antivirus security is out of date and i try to use live update and it says that it can’t establish a connection even though my internet is working fine. Worse part is that I think I have some spyware or malware because my computer is running very slow and random pop-ups occur a lot without me even being on a page with pop ups. Please help!!!

I’m very cheap so I installed only freeware softwares to protect my computer.

I have:
- Avast! Antivirus
- Ad-Aware by Lavasoft
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- ZoneAlarm Firewall
- I also have CCleaner

They’re all working out great and they’re all free…and to think I used to waste my money on internet/computer security!

What softwares can I add to my collection? Or am I good? Remember it has to be free if you make any suggestions! lol

If you want my combination here it is:

Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
SpyBot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
ZoneAlarm Firewall: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm
CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

-Also I’ve decided to uninstall Ad-Aware by Lavasoft and go with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

I have Windows Vista and was wondering what programs I can download for free that will help keep my pc safe.I would like a good spyware, firewall, antivirus program for free that works great.Any ideas? Thanks

Ok I have been reading a lot on different websites and through pages and pages on yahoo answers on computer security with mixed opinions.

I am trying to find what the best programs are. From what I have gathered there is different programs for different security issues and not just one will do the trick properly.

It seems like spysweeper might be the best for spyware along with some other free ones to run along side it. Is that true?

I have read a lot about Zone Alarm being the best firewall is that true?

For an ant-virus this is one that I keep reading about lots of different ones. I am looking for a very good one that will not slow the computer down too much any suggestions?

I have also read that using another internet browser like Firefox instead of IE will also decrease chances of attacks as well.

Any clarification on the subject would be great I am getting a new computer soon and it’s primary use will be for online school so it’s very important that I keep it protected.

Thanks in advance.
