I get error 999 but can still access all the favorite links available and my other emails. I have done the traditional stuff: shut down, restart, disconnect, log out, change password, disengage data theft protection, lowered my virus protection, called my ISP and they see nothing wrong with the my service and no "illegal" attempts to access my computer, deleted cookies and such. I have two other emails and i have full access with those. A few weeks ago i got a message from yahoo saying my email account has been comprimised and need to change my password. so i went to the home page and went on to change my password. when i’m logged in, i can see the preview of the emails, but when i click on them or the link, error-999 shows up! i’m at a loss. i have a bunch of emails i NEED to retrieve, but can’t.

Im on my sisters laptop now and i really need to know how too fix this but i cant get on the house computer at all to do anything cause it wont let me get logged in

Recently, an update gave my computer a virus and I was unable to detect it until my computer restarted. Afterwards, my computer could not get past the "Loading your personal settings…" pop up. I was able to get it back up after a while. All my documents were hidden and I eventually recovered them. This time around after putting up spyware and virus protection, I restarted my computer. Again! Everything is gone for sure this time, at least document wise. I still have some programs still floating around on the desktop. Other than that, everything is gone. What can I do? Months ago I had my dad take my computer to be fixed by his coworker. He was able to restore my computer completely but many of the factory settings have disappeared such as the complete restore options, new user accounts, etc.

When I accessed my computer the first time, it gave me a message that went something like "Your profile user is corrupt. Please contact your administrator."
I tried transferring all my information over to a new account, unfortunately the new account couldn’t even be opened due to the corrupted settings!

As of now, I know that 1) My user account is corrupt. 2) I cannot make a new user account and transfer my documents over, if I had any left. 3) I am in DIRE need of help.

Is there anyone who can help me? Thank you in advance..

Whenever I connect to (any site), my computer starts sending data. I do not know what or to where. I have Windows XP and IE6. I have Avira virus protection and have scanned my whole system without anything being reported. I am very careful about connecting to unknown sites and never open e:mails from unknown sources. I have some dud addresses in my address book and have not received any "undeliverable" e:mail notifications. Any idea what is happening or how I can find out what data is being sent and where it is being sent?

Those are just a few of the messages I get, and it won’t let me browse using Internet Explorer anymore. I have Windows Live for my security and virus protection, and I did a complete computer scan to remove anything harmful that might have been there. I still have 6 months left on my subscription, and the software is up-to-date. But the Vista Antispyware is still showing those messages and preventing me from accessing the internet. So I downloaded Mozilla Firefox from my brother’s computer and installed it onto my computer, and it works just fine. But the threatening messages are still there! And I can’t delete Internet Explorer from my computer. The Vista Antispyware wants me to buy into their subscription, but I don’t want to because the Windows Live one is still working and covers 3 computers in my home at a better price.

What should I think or do? Is it true and maybe the Windows Live software can’t detect it? It’s really annoying because it pops up warning messages every few minutes and sometimes gives very convincing names of certain threats that is apparently trying to access my computer at that moment. The Vista Antispyware icon is sitting in the notification area, and I can’t delete it. It’s nowhere in the Control Panel, and I can’t right click it. When I follow some of the prompts, it always lead me to a webpage to buy into its subscription, and I can’t navigate anywhere in Internet Explorer. HELP!!!

At the moment I have two security (anti spyware/ virus protection) systems on my computer. I want to delete one of them, because since a family member added the second the computer has become slower. I have AVG’s free 9.0 version and Microsoft Security Essentials. My question is which is the better of the two programs, that I should keep.

When I got on my computer(1/29/08)after school I got on and it said that Virus Protection Not Found. It said I need a new antivirus program. My computer is being attack by Spyware.Ardakey,Trojan Horse,Downloader, and Downloader.MisleadApp PLEASE HELP ME! PLEASE HELP ME A.S.A.P

I’ve been using AVG Free for over a year. I recently updated to version 9. It scans every day. All seems well. In the last two days, in the last 5 times of opening my computer I immediately see an urgent message from the ’security center’, that I do not have virus protection and have 42 threats, 3 critical. I try to remove them and can only do it if I buy the program. No, thanks. I check AVG. It tells me all is well. One security shield on the tool bar shows a white cross on red. Next to it is a blue and grey security shield. If I go to the security shield via the control panel all is well. I tried to remove this ‘Security Center’ program but even tho it says it is a trial program is says it is not removable. What’s going on? Suppossedly my internet provider, Cox Cable also has virus protection, Norton. So I don’t know what or which program to believe.

I have an external hard drive that has many years of photos, movies, games etc.

I just purchased a new laptop and need to get some stuff off of it. Last time i plugged it into my computer, my virus protection lit up and it contained a 1 or 2 viruses. I quickly unplugged the laptop and let the program delete or quarantine them.

Now I need to go back into that hard drive and either delete the viruses any extract my data.

I am running windows 7.

Suggestions?

I have tried different ones and I heard alot of the good ones are the free ones, I used to like Mcafee a few years back and I have it now but I have gotten all kinds of junk still now with it. It’s pretty useless, So what can I use for my computer that isn’t complicated to use. I want real time virus protection, firewire and everything but that fits a low budget, free or not. I already use Malwarebyte’s to scan but I need something good to stop things before they happen.

How do I install a good virus protection on this computer. Thank you from a concerned Mom.

When I go to My documents/my pictures and I try to do anything with my pics, I get a box that comes up and says Data Execution Prevention-microsoft windows

I am running windows XP, sp2, and it’s a DELL.
I am using avast virus protection, CCleaner, ad-aware, spybot search & destroy and window washer. I did a defrag and a disc cleanup.
I must say that it worked fine before I went on vacation and when I got home it was doing this. My son used the internet while he was here with the cats. Other than that, i don’t know what is going on.

When I turn my computer on and log into my profile my computer starts up normally and starts to load everything. But then after all the icons pop up and things start to boot up such as virus protection and stuff the taskbar goes away as do all my icons and it goes to just the wallpaper like if i had just logged in and its loading. This then goes back to the icons all popping back up and taskbar comes back and things start to load once again. Then it goes blank again…. is this a virus or some corrupted data in the OS? and how can i fix it i ran virus scanner multiple times. and it didnt fix it.

ThreatsHow does the Internet create security risks for my computer?
The Internet works by allowing one computer to send information to another computer across a network of worldwide computers. Rather than going directly to the intended computer, data often passes through several intermediate computers. Each intermediate computer has the potential to see the contents of data being transmitted — creating a security risk.

Other security risks can be created from files and programs downloaded to your computer or sent via e-mail. Some programs, called ‘viruses’ are written to intentionally damage your computer and the data stored on it. Make sure security updates for your operating system (Microsoft Windows or MAC OS X for example) are consistently installed on your computer. In addition, ensure your firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware software are up-to-date with the latest definitions.

Does your computer lack antivirus protection? The Charter Security SuiteTM provides complete protection for your compter. In addition to its award winning virus protection, The Charter Security Suite includes a firewall, anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-spyware, and parental controls. What is ‘malware’?
‘Malware’ is a generic term used to describe viruses, spyware, adware, Trojan horse, rootkits, worms or any other program with malicious intent.

What is a ‘virus’?
A virus is a program or piece of code that is installed and runs on your computer without your knowledge. Viruses can also replicate themselves and are often designed so that they automatically spread to other computer users. Viruses can be transmitted as attachments to an e-mail, as downloads, or via diskettes or CDs. Some viruses are harmless, but most can be quite damaging by erasing data or causing your hard disk to reformat.

What is a ‘worm’?
Worms are a self-replicating virus that does not alter files but resides in active memory and duplicates itself. Worms most often use parts of an operating system that are automatic and usually invisible to the user. It’s common for worms to be noticed only when their uncontrolled replication consumes system resources, slowing or halting other applications and traffic.

What is a ‘Trojan horse’?
A Trojan horse is a malicious code that is contained inside seemingly harmless programs or data. The purpose of a Trojan horse is to gain control of the computer and execute whatever it had been program to do. Many Trojan horses are designed to damage data on your hard drives, send back personal information, or corrupt your hard drive. In one celebrated case, a Trojan horse was programmed to find and destroy computer viruses. A Trojan horse may be widely redistributed as part of a computer virus.

What is ‘adware’?
Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen.

What is ’spyware’?
Spyware is software installed on your computer without your knowledge that gathers information such as surfing habits, for later retrieval by advertisers and/or other interested parties. It can record and send through the Internet your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other confidential and private information. It is often sold as a spouse monitor, child monitor, surveillance tool, or a tool for spying on users to gain unauthorized access. It can enter a computer as a virus or through installation of a new program.

What is a ‘rootkit’?
A rootkit is a set of processes or files that installs itself on your system without your knowledge or permission. Rootkits attempt to hide from antivirus, anti-spyware, and system management utilities. Originally, rootkits were used on UNIX® based systems for benign purposes. Today however, rootkits may be used to create a backdoor into your system for malicious purposes - such as intercepting information sent from your system, logging your keystrokes, using your system for denial of service attacks, and other deviant activities. Rootkits exist on multiple operating systems including UNIX®, Linux, Solaris®, and Microsoft Windows®.

What is a ‘zombie’ computer?
A ‘zombie’ computer is a system that has often been compromised by a virus. The virus typically installs remote access software on the compromised machine and the ‘host’ machine takes control of the compromised computer. Zombie computers are often used to send spam or send overwhelming amounts of traffic to a targeted server- causing it to crash. This form of attack is called a Distributed Denial of Service Attack.
