My cable modem light runs all the time, like it’s got data moving. I have a cordless router with wep security and firewall and Norton anti virus. Might be nuthin’ but the modem data light is always going so it makes me suspicious.
Its an old router it doesn’t have better security.

Let’s assume that a potential intruder does not have access to the home or the physical network. Let’s also assume that the proper security passwords are in place, WEP for example?

I’m leaning towards wireless since it encrypts your data before transmitting…

Let’s also assume that the routers are decent routers like Apple Airport Extreme or a Linksys brand.

I know with enough time and resources, no network is 100% secure so keep it general please!

I read that WEP is not safe, as well as WPA-PSK. It’s costly to have WPA or WPA2 with RADIUS server for home user. VPN would be a good idea, but VPN client software is expensive for Netgear wireless router (the only affordable wireless router with VPN).

So, I don’t know what the decent options are for my under 0 budget. All I have in mind is something with:

- Dual active Firewall (NAT and SPI).
- Intrusion Detection (IDS).
- WPA and WPA2 (PSK type, I guess).
- Ability to disable SSID broadcast and DHCP server.
- Logging feature of clients that request connection.
- Access policy control (support VLAN).

If it’s possible I still want the VPN, but I’m just daydreaming probably. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

thats right off it’s website how do i get my psp to get online with it?
i don’t know if i have security on it or not, how do i tell?
how do i tell if it’s wep or wap??
i don’t have a manule or any cd’s the internet dude came and hooked eveything up

How do I find out if I have WEP, or Wpa-PSK (TKIP), all that? and the password for it?

I have a gateway windows vista computer if that helps.

My friend brought his laptop over here and he needs the security code to get into my internet. I don’t remember it. It’s the “Network Key” that I’m looking for. How do I get it? Thanks.
Okay. Question rephrase time. I used the WEP which worked. However, it says the signal is excellent but the connectivity in Limited or there is no conncetivity. What now?

As I see it there are two separate security issues when it comes to wireless networking (wifi not wimax). First is the ability to stop a freeloader from your WAN and start piggybacking off of your nickel. I believe this is what WEP and WPA are for, correct? In other words blocking an unauthorized user on your wifi wan.

Secondly, a more serious concern, is the ability to snoop into your WAN and see all data traffic. Sensitive things such as cred card numb, pswds stuff like that. Does WEP and WPA and WAP apply here too? If not then what does? VPNs is one solution.

I’m a bit confused to which to apply when. Thanks!
Pls read carefully. My question is not how to set up the security options. My question is what are the DIFFERENCES in wifi security?

Am currently using WEP, but see options for WPA and WPA2. If those are better, how do I set them up and how will other laptops access them? Is it basically the same way? Some examples would be great!
