First off, let me say the message prompts are on the wrong end of Windows XP backup. What good is it to know that you shouldn’t use a FAT32 partition, or that you don’t have a floppy disk drive, AFTER you’ve made the backup file? Would it really hurt to have messages like that BEFORE the file is created??
Anyways…I have my backup image on an external hard drive. The laptop DOES NOT have a floppy drive, so I was unable to create an ASR diskette. Is this disk absolutely necessary? Can I still recover the data from my backup? It is an "All Information On My Computer" backup…does that make a difference?

Today I received a somewhat old but never used Northgate computer. After installing a bunch of updates from Microsoft, I downloaded microsoft windows xp service pack 3, when the install was almost finished the entire computer froze, I turned it off by pushing the power button but when I turned it back on it started normal but came to a black screen that said ———————–General Protection Fault and a few lines down it says, Verifying DMI Pool Data. I don’t know what to do!

One of my internal hard disk went out. They were set up in RAID 0 and lost all data. Got a new hard drive and re-installed Windows XP. Had to start from "scratch" as I could run the Acronis Recovery for some reason.

I still have the backup material. Only thing I want are my family pictures and videos. Any ideas on how to get it back?

I know it’s there somewhere.

I have windows XP Pro and need to uninstall zone alarm pro. Add/remove programmes doesnt work (says missing dlls) and if i try to reinstall original it wont install either. It isnt allowing me to turn on windows fiewall or install other security software and yet it wont run itself now. Can anyone help? It’s driving me nuts

I formatted my mother’s hard drive and reinstalled a fresh Windows XP for her. But I lost track and totally forgot to backup her files. Are those files still recoverable even tho I have formatted her hard drive?

I have gone into all programs, accessories, system tools, backup I have selected the backup wizard advanced option and clicked next.

Which of the 3 options should I select if I am backing up in preparation for a clean install?

Backup everything on this computer,
Backup selected files drives or network data and
Only backup the system state data

Which of those 3 options should I select in preparation for a clean install of windows XP
My pictures, music and videos are my main concern.

Dear Friends, I am using Windows XP and I had a virus into my computer. So I decided to backup all my data and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows. So to back up the data, I took the hard disk out of my computer and connected it to another computer to copy all the data.

Now here the problem starts !!!! Since I had Windows Login Password on my system, it is not letting me goto the folder and copy my files. Every time it says, access to the folder is denied. Following is more detail for your consideration:

1. I have connected the hard disk to another computer. My hard disk appears into the system.
2. I have to back up all the documents on my desktop & documents.
3. So I goto my hard disk, goto Documents & Settings > Users > My Name.
4. When I click on My Name folder, it says that folder can not be accessed. No permission. This is probably happening because I had my windows log-on password.

Can you please let me on how to get rid of this and copy my data from there. Or any other way to backup my data. Thanks for your help !!!!

I’ve been told by felony_r to go to control panel –> security and settings to disabled my inbuilt firewall. The problem is i cudn’t find it. For information, i’m using windows XP pro pack 2. Cud anyone help me?

I use Windows XP and Outlook Express on my computer. I would like to back up my e-mail addresses and some letters, and some Works documents, but most important to me are my photographs (stored on Picasa right now).

Can I use a data stick to do this? Once I use it as a backup, how do I add to it in the future for new items?

I know how to find out what size to purchase, but I’m worried it won’t take photographs.

Thanks for anyone’s assistance.

I am in need of replacing the hard drive on my pc as it is gradually deteriorating. I have purchased a replacement hard drive but am wondering how to go about backing up all of the data, programs and updates that are currently installed. When I put in the new hard drive I will be doing a fresh install of windows XP but do not want to go through the hassle of having to download all of the updates.

I reinstalled the OS using the "Recovery with automatic data backup"? I’m using windows xp

Can any kind newsreader please help me with my pen drive. When.I put the pen in the drive it asks me
to insert a disc into drive G.
It appears to be reading it as a disc drive. When I try to format it again, it asks me to insert a disc into drive G.
It used to work but has gone from bad to worse. I think I have made it worse by trying to fix it
I am running windows xp so no drivers are required .I bought it on ebay a few months ago
And don’t even remember if I got a warranty with it.
I contacted the seller explaining what was wrong a couple of times but he never even answered my e-mail.
Also when I right click on the drive, then click on open again, it asks me to insert a disc into drive G.
I also get the option to open it as a portable media device. The folder does open.
Inside is an icon of a walkman with ear phones.
When I try to drag anything into the folder it has a small black circle with a black line going across it.
It doesn’t allow me to do it. I’d be grateful is someone can offer some advice.
I don’t even know what make it is but it does have micro vault milestone goods stamped on it
Have also tried it in other computers with no luck.. Also it doesn’t have a data protection switch

I just got this surveillance camera and need it to check on my house every now and then while I’m on my Holiday.

So I just want to know how you record an actual movie of what is happening LIVE. Because I am not going to sit and stare at my computer screen 24/7 to see the slightest change. I want to record what is happening (onto my mac).
On the Instruction manual, it is pretty much made for Windows XP computers. I found the section where it’s for Mac Quicktime Players, but when I follow the steps, they don’t seem to work. As it says: A window will appear on your screen (to fill in your details; username, password). But this for me doesn’t happen.

So I just want to know if it’s me who can’t make this work or this camera isn’t compatible with Macs.
Is there a way to record videos (how to save it on your mac and view it)
Please give me links to download whatever I need. or just some info.

If this isn’t clear enough. Please leave questions.
I will frequently be checking and answering your questions.
Thanks.

I have a desktop PC running Windows XP SP2. I have around 100 gigs (and steadily growing) of data that I’d like to back up.

Until now, I’ve been manually copying the data to an external 80gig hard drive. As I’ve outgrown that drive, I thought that it would be a good time to reevaluate my storage strategy.

Here are the options as I understand them:
1. Burn to archival DVD and store offsite (I’d like to avoid this because of the time and expense involved — I also don’t really trust CDs/DVDs).
2. Buy a bigger external drive and install some or other backup utility — hopefully there’s an open source Win32 progam that’d work well.
3. Buy/make an external RAID array. (Is this necessary? I’m not looking for performance, just for reliable data storage. I also have no idea what’s involved in making a RAID array, beyond getting a couple of identical drives).
4. Network storage? Wouldn’t this be prohibitively expensive (not to mention time-consuming)?

Feedback?
Re "Data":

It’s the usual already-compressed digital media stuff: mp3s, jpegs, mpegs. I haven’t found it worth the effort to compress anything.
Follow up:
The pricing on the online storage sites that some of you have suggested is prohibitive; ~ 0/month for 200 gigs (the /month is for 2 gigs or so).

What about the Firewall that comes with Windows XP? Would it be better for me to leave it on, or to disable it?

my computer is about to break down and crash. it probably has like 15 viruses and it was a hassle just opening up mozilla firefox to get on the internet, there is a constant popup from mcafee that says "your computer is in danger. windows security center has detected spyware/adwar infection. it is strongly recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss…"
not only that, but my desktop has turned into a black screen with the words "your computer is in danger". i have mcafee, but am not really sure how to work it or even if i have all the supplies. some thing called "brave sentry 2.0" downloaded and it is removes viruses i suppose, but i honestly have no idea. please help!
i have a fujitsu c series lifebook, windows xp
i want to fix it without rebooting my entire computer, PLEASE. and i forgot to mention, task manager doesn’t open up either. it says it has been disabled by the administrator

I have heard about some people, especially those who were still on windows xp, having to completely backup all their data like pictures, music, documents, programs, onto an external hard drive when they upgrade to windows 7 because the upgrade reformats and erases everything from the harddrive to upgrade. Will I have to do the same if I upgrade from windows vista to windows 7?

We have two Windows XP SP2 computers. One has a 145 GB hard drive with about 52 GB used, and the other has a 111 GB hard drive with about 57 GB used. We need a complete backup solution that will allow us to recover 100% of a hard drive if there was a total failure, and also give us the ability to restore individual data files if necessary. What does everybody recommend?

Tried to sign on to hotmail page. Didn’t even know I was there. Moved the scroll bar down and caught sight of a black object which was part of a letter. On a 15" screen, it makes it hard to read. I would need something like a 3 foot screen to see the page(maybe) This happens many times. Font view is set to smallest. How else can I adjust? My pc used to be a data server so something in its settings is off? Windows XP. Not a virus. Has not been on-line without uptodate antivirus protection. Nothing has been found. Have tried more than 1 AntiVirus program out just to "recheck it" No adware either or spyware or trojans.

When I go to My documents/my pictures and I try to do anything with my pics, I get a box that comes up and says Data Execution Prevention-microsoft windows
to help protect your computer, windows has closed this program.
Name windows explorer
publisher microsoft corporation.
This is a new problem for me and it’s anoying. Is there anyway to fix this?
I am running windows XP, sp2, and it’s a DELL.
I am using avast virus protection, CCleaner, ad-aware, spybot search & destroy and window washer. I did a defrag and a disc cleanup.
I must say that it worked fine before I went on vacation and when I got home it was doing this. My son used the internet while he was here with the cats. Other than that, i don’t know what is going on.
